Church

After reading this article a few days ago, I have been trying to find the courage and words to write a post about it. In the article, I read that over eight million people in their twenties have left the church and everyone is trying to find out why. The author gives her 15 reasons she left the church. Her reasons almost gave me a sense of peace because I realized that there were other people out there that shared some of my thoughts. I left my church my senior year of high school. There was one deciding factor on why I left but thinking back on it, it was just a matter of time before I moved on. I decided that I would give my five reasons that I left my church.

1. I left my church because the judgment I felt when I walked through the doors far outweighed the love and support I felt.

2. I left my church because I could not simply help someone without trying to save them.

3. I too left my church because I knew I would never see a woman behind the pulpit.

4. I left my church because I believe in evolution and was told that was un-Christian. (I mean do you really think that Adam and Eve looked like us??)

5. I left my church because I was told by a youth leader that if I did not support and/or vote for George W. Bush that I was not a Christian.

I don’t want people to think that I went to a horrible church. It was just a very conservative church with a lot of conservative members. I formed some of my best friendships with the people I went to church with and went on some amazing mission trips that changed my life. I don’t regret any of the time I spent at the church or doing church activities.

When I moved to Knoxville to start college I decided that I wanted to find a church to attend. I tried a couple a Methodist churches with some friends (I needed a break from the Baptists!) and finally started attending a non-denominational church that I enjoyed. They had a praise band, very contemporary services, and I saw a lot of familiar faces from campus in the congregation. I continued to go to this church for a couple of years and enjoyed it. It wasn’t anything that was amazing and changed my life, but I felt good when I left. One Sunday though clearly identified “the reason I left the church.” The preacher was talking about a new community/support group they had formed for the family and friends of homosexuals. The idea was that by attending this group, you would learn how to help your homosexual friend or family member overcome being gay. I left the church that morning and never went back.

After I stopped attending this particular church, I still felt like I wanted to find a church. I started going to church with David at St. John’s Episcopal. I had never gone to an Episcopal church before but had gone to a Lutheran church where there are a lot of similarities. Even though we’ve been going there for a couple of years now, I still “follow his lead!” I really love the church I go to now. I don’t know any of the members except for the few people that I know from outside of, but that’s okay. Making friends is not at the top of my church priority list but I’m not against it. I don’t feel like I’m judged when I walk through the door except the old lady that sits in front of us that is decked out in Prada every Sunday has probably judged some of my Target dresses. : ) The sermons are never too deep and get into things such as politics – they are simply about being a good person.

Sorry this post was so long - I guess I had a lot to say on the topic! My faith is something that I have struggled with for a while and I feel like I am at a pretty good place with it right now.

I tried to find a back in the day church picture but I guess we didn’t have digital cameras then so those pictures are probably in a shoebox in Duluth! So here is a picture of Me, Shanna, Jenn and Steph before going to a Corey Smith concert in Athens. I gave you 5 reasons I left the church earlier, but those girls are 3 reasons I stayed for as long as I did!

Throwback Thursday

Georgia Game 2007

I started looking through Facebook at old pictures to use for my post today and I found the perfect pair! I love that these are basically the same picture just 4 years apart. The boys are even wearing the exact same pants - ha!

We all three look like such babies in the first picture. It is amazing to think about how much we have changed and how different our lives are now from being carefree sophomores!

The Little Things

Sometimes the most cliche sayings are the most fitting and true. Today has been a pretty uneventful day so far. I don't have much going on at work, I had a PR test, and I have to take my computer to Apple after work. Today is just one of those days that make you appreciate the little things. I've experienced a few of these today...

While waiting outside my classroom before my test, a girl was sitting on the ground and got a phone call so she got up and went outside to talk on the phone. When she got up, she left her wristlet sitting on the ground. The guy that was sitting across from her didn't skip a beat to grab it and chase after her to give it back to her. What that guy did without even thinking probably saved that girl a world of trouble. I feel like I need to give him a "Random Act of Kindness" star like we got in elementary school. It just made me smile to see someone do something nice for a stranger.

After my PR test, David picked me up and we went to get frozen yogurt. <3 points> I love frozen yogurt and when the sun is out, it just tastes that much better!

When I got back to my office after class and the frozen yogurt detour, I un-paused (not a word, but I like it!) my Spotify to hear one of my favorite Sister Hazel songs.

I guess the point of this post is that even when you don't have anything exciting going on or any real reason to smile, take a look at all the little things and I'm sure you can find something! If you can't think of anything... remember it's Wednesday - the work week is more than half over!

Back to the Grind

I haven't blogged in forever! I haven't really done much of anything in forever it seems like. My surgery was almost a week and a half ago and I'm still not back to normal. (Not even close, really!) I finally got the cast off of my face and the splint removed from the inside of my nose on Friday afternoon and it made a world of difference on how I felt! I am still in pain and have some discomfort, but after going to the doctor on Friday, I finally felt like I was on the road to recovery. My doctor said the surgery went well so once I'm healed I should feel much better. I am so anxious to see if I'm "healed!"

Even though it was nice to be off work, I wish I could have spent it doing something other than recovering from surgery! I used up almost all of my leave from work, but I guess that's what it is there for, right? I am thankful that I was able to do it during Spring Break so I didn't have to miss classes and I'm so thankful that my mom was able to come up and stay with me.

It is kind of nice getting "back to the grind." I am a routine type of person so being back to my routine will be nice. At work, I'm planning an event which I love to do. I have a couple of things I need to work on for school - I have a PR test on Wednesday and a project due next week. I started back to Weight Watchers this morning - writing down what I eat and counting my points. I gained almost 2 pounds after my surgery. (That I'm hoping I can get them off this week!) I think that can be attributed to not moving off the couch and having to eat grits and applesauce constantly to try and not be sick to my stomach. I am also going to try and get back to blogging everyday. I enjoy doing it and my followers (few and far between) enjoy reading it - I think! Ha!

(Back to the Grind of sitting at my desk and staring at my computer!)

Flowers

Sorry I have been behind on my blogging - the past few days have been pretty rough. I haven't been healing as quickly as I had hoped or expected. I've just been in a lot of pain and had a lot of nausea which is no fun at all. I did have a nice surprise today when some pretty flowers arrived at my door. Thanks so much Trey, Chris, and Rebekah! They are so pretty and definitely made me feel a little better!

Recovery

My surgery went well this morning and I have been resting and watching basketball on and off all day. My mom has been taking care of me and waiting on me all day - David has helped some too! I am finally starting to feel a little like a real person again. I'm in quite a bit of pain so we are making sure to stay on schedule with my pain medicine. I am so hoping the surgery will be worth it in the end!

My Mom

I am so thankful for my Mom. I truly have no idea what I would do without her! She is coming up to Knoxville to be with me during my surgery tomorrow and to take care of me while I'm recovering - so glad she is able to come up! I am so glad we have such a great relationship!

A Little Late In the Game

I finally got a Kindle! I have been a little hesitant with the whole e-reader revolution. I love real books. I love the smell of them, the way the pages feel, and just flipping through the pages of a good book. Yeah, I guess I'm kind of a book nerd. I had been thinking of looking into getting a Kindle or Nook or one of those things for a little while and thought it would be nice to have after my surgery. A friend got a new Kindle Fire for her birthday so she was selling her regular Kindle she got for Christmas and I decided it was a sign to get one. I got a great deal on it which makes it an even better purchase. I've got to figure out what book I want to download first and find a cute cover and I will be good to go!

Sundays

I have such a love/hate relationship with Sundays. I love them because they are usually relaxing with very little to do, but I hate them because they are the end of the weekend. I slept in this morning until about 11 o'clock! Even though it was technically only 10, that is really late for me. It felt so great. After we all got ready, we headed to Don Gallo for some lunch. Mexican isn't the best place to go when counting points, but I don't think I did horrible. We of course ordered cheese dip and I opted to get corn tortillas instead of using chips. It wasn't the same, but I still got my cheese dip fix. I ordered chicken fajita nachos for my meal without the chips. Even when not doing Weight Watchers, I hate getting chips with nachos because they always get soggy.

After lunch, we headed to Loft to do some shopping - of course! They were having a sale and we had coupons so did we really have a choice? I think not! I got some really cute shirts that will be good for spring. When we got home from running around, it was time for Shanna to head back to the A. She packed up her stuff and we played with Kip in the park for a little bit and she was off. We had such a good weekend together and I already can't wait for her to come back!

Shop Til You Drop

One of my friends from Duluth, Shanna, came into town this weekend. We decided to go to Sevierville today and do some shopping at the outlets. I had a pretty successful day - got some jeans at Gap that I went for and got a purse! I've been looking for a nice, new purse for awhile, but I couldn't find one that I really loved until today at the Michael Kors outlet. I'm excited to switch out purses and start carrying my new one. We stopped at the Bass Pro store for David on the way home and Shanna and I had fun in the camo department!

We did a little more shopping when we got back to Knoxville, had dinner at Outback and then home to do a little Pinterest crafting! We made burlap wreaths. I made an orange one that will be perfect for the fall and football season.

March Madness

College Basketball is possibly at the very top of my favorite sports list. So of course March is one of my favorite months. There is basketball on non-stop and always some really exciting games. The SEC tournament started last night with Kentucky playing at 1:00 today and Tennessee playing tonight. My plan is to watch the Kentucky game on my computer and then head to OCI after work to watch the UT game. I realized yesterday that while I'm recovering from my surgery next week, I'll be able to watch the first NCAA tournament games - pretty good timing if you ask me! Here is a picture from a Kentucky game a couple of years ago in Columbia with Whitney and my cousins, Lori and Bethany. Even though Kentucky lost that game (1 of 2 losses that regular season and I witnessed both of them in person- ugh!) we still had a really good time!

Throwback Thursday

I miss undergrad! I miss staying up late for no reason, running errands in the middle of the day, and living in the same city as my best friends. College really is one of the best times of your life. I made amazing friendships that I'm sure will last a lifetime.

From the Kitchen

I saw a recipe for cupcakes a while back that I've been wanting to try. It sounded super simple and pretty tasty! All you do is use a box cake and a can of Diet Coke instead of the oil, water, and eggs. I decided that I would make chocolate cupcakes with Diet Coke and use Lite Cool Whip for icing and put strawberries on top. When I got home, I discovered that I didn't have cupcake liners so I opted to just make a 9x9 cake instead. I preheated the oven to 350*, sprayed the pan with some Pam, mixed the cake mix and 12 oz. of Diet Coke, poured it in the pan and put it in to bake for about 30 minutes. SO easy! After the cake cooled, I quickly cut a piece and topped it with Cool Whip and fresh strawberries. Let me tell you, it was delicious! I'm doing Weight Watchers (more about this later) and this wonderful dessert calculated to only 2 points! I can't wait to try some more flavors - I'm thinking Funfetti and Diet Sprite next!

Daisy Pup

Sweet little Daisy Mae playing with her duck - the first day I got her.

Crazy Daisy Dog - 72 pounds and full of energy!

I got Daisy about a year and a half ago but couldn't keep her because of my allergies. My sister adopted her and now she is my niece-dog! She is a crazy dog but so sweet!

The Desk

My mom, Whitney, and I stumbled across this really cool store a few years ago called Nadeau. It has some really awesome pieces of furniture and isn't too expensive. The first time we were there, Whitney bought a really cool turquoise desk. Probably about six months later, I decided that I wanted the desk too. The only problem with that is the store doesn't really know when they will get certain pieces in and can't just order the desk like at other stores. Basically, you just have to go to the store periodically and check. This was a little problem since I live in Knoxville and the store is in Atlanta! My name was on a "list" to be called when the desk came in, but after about a year of waiting with no calls, I decided that there never was a list!

When I was home a few weeks ago, we decided to go check on the off chance that they may have the desk. Well, of course they didn't have it! The lady working was very nice and asked what exactly I was looking for. I told her what it was I wanted and she started looking at a packing slip that had stuff expected to be delivered that week. Much to my surprise, the desk was on the packing slip! I was really excited, but I didn't want to get my hopes up too much. I called Wednesday morning to get the status of the shipment and found out that they did actually get the desk. My mom called and paid for it over the phone and then picked it up for me. I brought it back up with me, but haven't really had time to move stuff around until this weekend. So, I finally have it set up and I love it!
Not the best picture, but it will do!

Man's (or Woman's) Best Friend

There was some pretty bad weather in Knoxville all day yesterday. I got sent to the basement at work for a little bit and then ended up in the closet at the apartment last night. When the weatherman was saying, "Gallaher View, take cover!" I knew that my worrying was justified. I got Kip and we went to my closet. (David was at a movie and had no clue what was going on.) Kip stayed in the closet with me making sure I was okay because he could sense that I was freaking out a little bit!

All of the bad weather moved on and today was beautiful - a great day to be outside! Kip and I went for a long walk and then played at the dog park for a little bit to enjoy the day. He ran around for a bit and played with some tree branches that had fallen last night and then was exhausted and decided to just lay in the sun for a few minutes.

Snapshots

During the month of March, I'm going to try and post a picture every day. Some days I may write something about the picture and other days I may just put a picture. For Day One, I'm going to post a picture of the "view" from my office.

The windows in my office look out to Strong Hall, a little bit of the strip, part of the Panhellenic building, and the pedestrian bridge that connects Clement and Strong to the rest of campus. I cannot even begin to think about how many times I have walked across that bridge!

It is a beautiful day and I have my windows open. I love having these windows in my office because it lets me pretend that I’m not cooped up inside all day!
